DEPARTMENT OF IIEALTII <br /> <br />25 Meade Street <br />Worcester, Massachusetts 01610 <br />(508) 799-8531 <br /> <br />IDepartmentalMission Statement: <br /> To provide exemplary administrative, environmental and medical services in order~ <br /> to enhance public health and safeguard the environment by monitoring and I I <br /> assessing community needs and providing prevention, protection and educational i ~ <br /> resources to ensure the highest quality of life within the City of Worcester. <br /> <br />Departmental Overview: <br />T he department is responsible for <br />providing a wide range community <br /> based public health, <br />environmental, and medical services to <br />the citizens of Worcester. The Department <br />programs are designed and implemented <br />to provide an educational resource to the <br />community in an effort to enhance the <br />quality of life in the City. Federal, State, <br />and City ordinance requires the <br />Department to enforce all public health <br />and environmental regulations to prevent <br />the deterioration of acceptable standards. <br /> <br />Department personnel monitor food <br />offered for consumption to ensure it is <br />wholesome, free from adulteration, <br />properly labeled, identifiable, and <br /> <br />manufactured at an approved source. All <br />food establishments receive mandated <br />inspections to determine compliance with <br />the provisions contained within the <br />Massachusetts Sanitary Code. The Air, <br />Water, and Hazardous Material Division <br />inspect the air and water quality of the <br />community. The Worcester drinking <br />water supply is comprehensively <br />monitored from the reservoirs throughout <br />the distribution system to ensure the <br />highest quality of product. In addition, <br />the department inspects swimming pools, <br />natural bathing areas, responds to <br />hazardous materials spills, and addresses <br />complaints regarding air, noise, and odor <br />pollution. <br /> <br />Upon request of the owner or tenant, the <br />Lead Poisoning Prevention Program <br /> <br />CITY OF WORCESTER FISCAL 2005 ANNUAL BUDGET <br /> <br /> Page 1 <br /> <br /> <br />
