UNIGN STATIGN

City Hall Room 309
455 Main Street
Worcester, Massachusetts 01608
(508) 799-1175

Departmental Overview:

p lans for the Union Station area are
proceeding to make it a
centerpiece of downtown
development. Union Station, the
symbol of Worcester's impressive
economic resurgence, requires
operational expenses (heating,
electricity, janitorial services, property
management, security, etc.) to be
budgeted by the City. The transition
period between construction completion
and tenant leasing requires an infusion of
operating funds to maintain this glorious
building. The City and the Worcester
Redevelopment Authority have located
private sector businesses in the past year.
Union Station The Restaurant opened in
May of 2003 and Union Blues, a jazz
and blues club, opened in February of
2004. The ramp that connected the
Common Outlets and Washington
Square has been removed and the
groundbreaking for the new Peter

Pan/Greyhound Bus Terminals will
occur this spring. This is the next major
step in creating a true inter-modal center
at the Station. Next year it is anticipated
to m-employ the connection with the
Blackstone Valley Heritage Corridor and
the bike trails that connect Providence
and Worcester. Additionally, this fall the
bids will be put forth by Mass Highway
to construct the new roadway
configuration in Washington Square.
The roundabout to be constructed will
enhance access to the Station and create
two development parcels in Washington
Square. These parcels will be placed on
the market for development at an
anticipated developers conference in the
fall. Plans are underway for additional
parking facilities at the Parcel Post
Building. It is anticipated that the
City/WRA will acquire this building this
spring.

CITY OF WORCESTER FISCAL 2005 ANNUAL BUDGET

Page 1
